Your phone could be made brighter by Android 16’s slight UI improvements and dynamic battery indication.

What you must understand

  • The battery symbol in the most recent Android 16 beta 3 has a dynamic color design that becomes vivid green when charging and red when the battery is low.
  • Additionally, the conventional five-segment Wi-Fi signal indicator is simplified to three segments, giving it a more streamlined look.
These graphic changes, which are not enabled by default and may change before the official release, are concealed in the most recent beta.
  • Google has already released beta versions of its Pixel phones for Android 16, the company’s much anticipated next operating system upgrade. According to new research from the most recent beta, the battery symbol may be the first of several UI components to undergo substantial modifications.

It appears that Google is developing new status bar icons for the future Android 16 operating system, based on research by Mishaal Rahman (via Android Authority). Rahman has noticed several modifications to the status bar icons, which reflect the battery level and Wi-Fi signal quality, in the most recent Android 16 beta 3.

Previously displaying five segments to indicate signal strength, the Wi-Fi indicator is currently only showing three segments. With the impending release of Android 16, it appears to be a clever small adjustment. In a similar vein, the battery icon hasn’t changed in a while, however it seems to be noticeably shifting colors this time.

Rahman points out that the battery icon’s white backdrop will now have a vibrant color palette. When the phone’s battery is fully or properly charged, solid white stays in the backdrop. When the battery is low and not charging, it will turn red. The other notable difference, though, is that the Android phone now displays a vivid green hue while charging.

Additionally, the battery icon is now oriented horizontally instead of vertically like it was in the previous version. Additionally, the battery level is now shown in a stronger typeface.

% representation. Since these new status bar icons must be explicitly activated in the Android 16 beta 3 and aren’t enabled by default, it’s possible that the feature is still in development and won’t be available when the official version is released.

Google has already experimented with redesigning the status bar symbols, including the battery. The developer preview for Android 15 released in April of last year also hinted at a potential redesign of the status bar icons. The updated battery icon, however, was not included in the subsequent stable Android 15 version.
