Let’s start with this: I don’t dislike the summaries that appear on the lock screen of my iPhone thanks to Apple Intelligence. Simply said, it doesn’t seem like the functionality is fully developed yet.
With iOS 18, Apple debuted AI summaries, which are intended to provide you with a visually appealing summary of all the alerts you get from a single app. You will get a summary of your alerts in one or two phrases rather than having to read through four or five separate messages. On paper, this sounds fantastic. It’s a mixed bag in reality.
When Apple Intelligence tries to summarize alerts, it may provide very inaccurate and unintelligent results. With the introduction of iOS 18.3, Apple was fortunate enough to make some necessary adjustments, but the functionality is still lacking. All notification summaries are now italicized, however, so you can immediately and readily recognize them as AI summaries.
Another significant modification to notification summaries is the temporary disabling of the capability for all news applications, including CNET and Apple News, due to inadequately described headlines. Finally, if you’re not pleased with how notification summaries function with certain applications but don’t want to fully stop the feature, you can now quickly disable them from your lock screen.
Here’s all you need to know about disabling notification summaries in case you’re still not happy with the way they operate, even with the most recent upgrades. It’s also important to remember that iOS 18.4 is now available without any feature upgrades. We’ll show you how to turn off these AI summaries entirely if you wish to stop using them until Apple irons out any issues.

Although I am aware that Apple Intelligence is attempting to assist…
Using artificial intelligence (AI), Apple Intelligence’s notification summary function “intelligently” condenses your alerts so you can quickly review the most important information from your busiest applications. Additionally, the function doesn’t always make sense with text messages, even if it does a good job of condensing lengthy emails into manageable chunks.
Sometimes, Apple Intelligence interprets things too literally.
I got many texts the other day describing how awful a trek was and how the individual felt “dead” (tired) afterward, along with a few other vague information. For me, Apple Intelligence summed up those few signals as follows:
An iPhone notification screenshot with the following message displayed Extremely challenging and almost deadly hike
It’s hardly the best wake-up message.
This book describes how my buddy was “killed” by a trainer after a particularly difficult session.
overview of a text message notification
My buddy was slain by the trainer? Or vice versa?
Sarcasm, exaggerations, jokes, and slang are just not well received by Apple Intelligence, and this is especially true of the notification summaries function. And given how casual text messaging can be, that’s an issue. Even a subreddit with a ton of awful summary notifications that individuals have gotten from Apple Intelligence may be found. It assumes everything, which may result in some quite terrifying, inaccurate, or just plain frustrating text message summaries.
How to disable text message notification summary
I turned off text message notification summaries so I wouldn’t have to worry every time an upsetting summary showed up. It’s simple if you wish to follow suit:
Open the Settings app.
Select Notifications > Preview Summarization.
Turn off Messages: An image of iOS 18.1’s Notifications settings demonstrating how to disable Summarize Previews for Messages
Any iPhone app’s notification summaries may be turned off.
You will view each individual text message on your lock screen or notification center as normal, rather than being shown with a summary of many text messages. As I said previously, it works rather well for emails and third-party applications, but you could fully stop notification summaries (turn off Summarize Previews) for every single app on your phone.
Notification summaries may now be disabled from your lock screen.
Without accessing your settings, you may turn off notification summaries for individual apps directly from your lock screen as long as you’re running iOS 18.3. Simply slide left on the notification summary on your lock screen, choose Options, and then touch Turn Off “App” Summaries if you’re not content with how the notification summaries feature summarizes for a certain app.
