Finally, you can turn off Instagram’s read receipts feature for direct messages. This Is How

Instagram claims to be giving you more control over direct messages, allowing you to modify messages that have already been received and highlight significant exchanges at the top of your direct messages. The ability to finally turn off read receipts, however, is the new feature that excites me the most since it will prevent other users from knowing if you have read their messages.

Read receipts are meant to inform the individuals you communicate with when you have finished reading their messages and vice versa. However, there are some who dislike the function, like myself: I don’t always want people to know whether I’ve seen their message, particularly if I’m too busy to reply or just need more time to think of one. Knowing that someone has seen their message but has not replied causes worry or tension for other people.

You may dislike read receipts for a variety of reasons, and if so, the latest upgrades released this week allow you to finally turn them off on Instagram. Here’s how.

How to turn off Instagram’s read receipt feature

Open the Instagram app on your iOS or Android device, then press the profile symbol located in the bottom-right of the navigation bar to view your profile. Select Settings and Privacy from the three-dash menu once you’re on your profile. Then, under How others may engage with you, scroll down to Messages and story responses. Last but not least, choose Show read receipts and turn off Read receipts.

No one you send a direct message to on Instagram will be able to see whether you have viewed their message after it is toggled off. Rather, the message will just appear as sent. It’s also crucial to remember that if you deactivate read receipts for yourself, it will also disable read receipts for the recipient. This means that you won’t be able to tell whether someone has read a message you send them since it will just say “sent” even if they have.

Go into your direct messages, start a discussion, tap the name of the other person at the top of the chat, choose Privacy & security, and turn off read receipts if you want to restrict access to them and not to everyone you speak with.
